What’s On
GZA (of Wu Tang Clan)
o2 Academy
27th January
GZA redeemed himself in Toast’s eyes a few years back at Corporation for failing to materialise at 1995’s Phoenix Festival. Here, then, and with nothing to make up for, he can stand on his own merits with a clean sheet, as far as we’re concerned. The jaded b-boy in us would be happy to simply hear ‘Liquid Swords’ in its entirety but it should be nice to see what he’s been up to lately, as well. The ‘plus special guests’ tag line is as equally exciting, given the company GZA keeps.
The Hudares + Nick Booth
Frog & Parrot
27th January
There’s a lot to be said for bands that dispense with the pretence and just knuckle down to the business of playing music well. Fresh from the release of their recent Furnace Hill EP, The Hudares arrive at the Frog with their no-nonsense Brit rock n roll and pretty damn good it is too. Nick Booth provides support.
Thin Lizzy
City Hall
29th January
The boys are back in town, and in this current incarnation of Thin Lizzy, the legacy of the rock legends is handled vocal-wise by ‘The Almighty’ frontman Ricky Warwick, filling the ample shoes of the late Phil Lynott. As Almighty fans, we’re quite excited about seeing Ricky busting out Jailbreak, Don’t Believe a Word and more… Join us, won’t you?
Canterbury
Corporation
4th February
Indie Rock band on the rain-slick precipice of hitting the big time Canterbury roll into town for a headlining gig at Corp. Hmm. Toast should hang around in Corp, it feels. Perhaps this’ll be just the ticket. Support comes from Proxies and Straight Lines.
Pulled Apart By Horses
The Leadmill
16th February
We have to admit that we were a little sceptical about this lot at first, but after hearing recent V.E.N.O.M a whole load of times, we’re officially on board. They also have a song called ‘I Punched a Lion in the Throat’, which is a bold claim for sure. See them hit the Leadmill like a nuclear warhead on the 16th Feb.
Carmen Ghia & The Hotrods
Queens Social Club
18th February
Whooo, mama, this sounds like a white-hot rock n roll extravaganza, right here. Carmen Ghia and the Hotrods can always be relied upon to bring the goods, and the addition of a full supporting lineup that includes burlesque and magic performances points to a damn fine evening’s entertainment. Dress sharp and we’ll see you down there.
SBTRKT (Live)
Plug
22nd February
DJ and Producer SBTRKT (pronounced Subtract) is an enigmatic sort, choosing as he does to wear neon-flecked ceremonial masks when he plays. This allows his unique blend of electro, dub-step and house to speak for itself. This show at Plug is certain to be a massive one, so we’d advise getting in on this as soon as possible.
Pedro
Dan SANE
25th February
This is a massive booking for the guys behind Dan SANE as Pedro is part of
the Romanian threesome Arpiar (Pedro, Raresh & Rhadoo) from Bucharest. And hotly tipped by their peers including Villalobos and Hawtin amongst others. There won’t be many pedestrians here tonight as this is strictly for the
underground sound connoisseur.
